Mistakes of Do It Yourself UX

Over my years of working with clients who have attempted to do their own UX design, I noticed a pattern of common mistakes. Despite best intentions, these mistakes can be very costly in terms of losing customers and damaging their companies brand. Once a users trust in a website or app is lost, it can be very hard to get it back.

Below is a list of 10 common mistakes companies and brands should avoid.

1. Not doing any user research

Failing to conduct thorough user research leads to designs that don’t align with user needs and behaviors. Companies often make assumptions about what users want, resulting in features that are unused or confusing.

2. Over complicating the design

Complex layouts, excessive features, and convoluted navigation can overwhelm users. Simplicity is key; an overly intricate design can frustrate users and hinder their ability to achieve their goals.

3. Overloading with information

Presenting too much information on a single page can overwhelm users and hinder their ability to focus on key details.

4. Inconsistent design

A lack of visual and interaction consistency across pages can confuse users and diminish the overall user experience.

5. Lack of mobile responsiveness

Neglecting mobile users by not optimizing the website or app for various screen sizes and devices can result in a poor user experience and lost opportunities for engagement.

6. Ignoring accessibility

Neglecting to create accessible designs can not only alienate users with disabilities, limiting their access to valuable content and services, but can discriminate against them thereby breaking the law. Companies must prioritise inclusive design practices.

7. Neglecting performance

Slow loading times and poor performance can drive users away. Failing to optimise for speed can impact user satisfaction and search engine rankings, leading to missed opportunities.

8. Lack of a clear hierarchy

Poor information architecture and content organisation can make it hard for users to prioritise and understand the content’s importance.

9. No user testing

Failing to conduct usability testing can result in missed design flaws, leading to poor user satisfaction and lost business opportunities.

10. Ignoring feedback

Neglecting user feedback and analytics prevents companies from identifying and addressing usability issues and missed opportunities for improvement.

Last word…

These mistakes highlight the importance of involving UX designers with experience and knowledge of a user-centered design approach. It’s never too early or late to call in a professional UX designer. What are you waiting for? 🙂
