ChatGPT in UX? Absolutely!

ChatGPT has already established itself as another valuable tool in my UX tool box, supporting and enhancing my UX work and certainly not something that replaces the work I do. So what do I use ChatGPT for in my work as a UX designer? Here are a few examples.

The creation of personas

“Who are the users of this product?” is often the first question of I ask. Personas are very important because they represent the characteristics and behaviours of target users for a product and help to inform and guide the UX design process. As a starting point to think about and understand who the users are, I often prompt ChatGPT to create personas.

Idea generation and brainstorming

Personally I find this a strength of ChatGPT. I use ChatGPT as a collaborative brainstorming partner, to generate ideas and suggestions that can inspire my UX design approach by providing diverse perspectives and fresh concepts. For example, I prompted ChatGPT to suggest functionality for an app suitable for a self-employed Yoga Teacher offering one-to-one personal lessons.

To explain the importance of UX

Although the fundamental principles of UX design have not changed, the field of UX has evolved significantly since I started back in 2000 and today the majority of clients understand the importance of a user centered design approach. However, occasionally I still have to explain to clients the importance of UX across the stages of a products development life cycle. I have used ChatGPT to provide “independent third party” arguments to support the case for UX.

For copywriting content

I admit the copy ChatGPT produces is not perfect. It can be repetitive, inaccurate, lacks the “human touch” and requires reworking – like all copy, but it provides a fast starting point.

Last word…

It will be some time before we can start envisioning a world where UX designers are sipping margaritas on a beach while AI handles everything. My work as a UX designer is not about to be made obsolete. As architects of digital experiences, UX designers have not just technical skills, but also have the ability to infuse empathy, creativity, and strategic thinking into their work.

UX design is comparable to deciphering a cryptic code, where human psychology is involved. This complex understanding, refined through years of human interaction, is an irreplaceable aspect of UX design that ChatGPT and other AI – currently – struggles to replicate. The intricate, awe-inspiring UX designs that push boundaries and evoke emotion are still the product of human UX designers.

So, get in touch. I look forward to working with you on your next project accompanied by ChatGPT and my other AI friends. 🙂
